Queen Street cotton mill

To enhance our hisotry unit, we visited Queen Street cotton mill. The children had been learning about where cotton comes from and the process to get cotton to Englad. We looked at the cotton mill working conditions and how poor they were, especially for children. We had a tour around the mill. There were onver 900 machines in the room. We were lucky enough to see and hear 1 machine in action- it was loud!
We also had a brief experience of Victorian schooling. The children lined up boys and girls and had a nail inspection. The children then sat on the benches and had a slate board to write on. They practised letters and numbers before moving to arithmetic. If you were caught slouching, you were pulled to the front and made to wear a back board ( Miss Till had to stand with this on!)
The children had a brilliant day, and it was great to see their previous knowledge used and learning more about the mill work.
